Art now attracts a wide range of buyers, from seasoned collectors to newcomers, all keen to capitalize on its potential for strong returns. Many buy art for personal enjoyment, to display in their homes, to potentially profit from its future sale, and to enjoy the prestige of owning valuable pieces.

The increasing interest in art as a financial asset in the modern world has given rise to art investment funds. These funds simultaneously promise high returns and the social clout of owning prized artworks, offering a variety of investors the chance to tap into the art market without needing to be experts themselves.

While the idea of art as a lucrative investment might sound glamorous, the reality is more complex and riddled with challenges. I would argue that these funds might not be the golden ticket they seem to be.

What Are Art Investment Funds?

Art investment funds are financial tools that allow investors to pool their money and profit from buying and selling artworks. These funds typically focus on high-value pieces that are expected to appreciate over time. Managed by experts in the art market, the goal is to acquire artworks with strong long-term growth potential—whether it's based on the artist’s rising fame, the artwork’s historical significance, or the general market trends dominating the art world at a specific point in time. In this way, art investment funds can be viewed as an alternative asset class, offering a way for investors to diversify their portfolios.

The appeal of these funds is clear: they offer a unique combination of social prestige and potential profit. Investing in a fund provides art lovers with access to expert selection and management without the need to become art experts themselves. Owning art through these funds can seem like a unique way to grow wealth. However, before diving in, it's important to consider some significant downsides.

Lack of Liquidity: A Long-Term Commitment

One of the most significant challenges with art investment funds is the lack of liquidity. Unlike more traditional investments like stocks or bonds, art is an illiquid asset.

When you invest in an art fund, your money is tied up in physical pieces of artwork that may take years to sell. The process of selling art often involves auctions, private sales, or gallery exhibitions (all of which take time and are subject to volatile market conditions). Even under the best circumstances, selling art can be a lengthy and unpredictable process.

This lack of liquidity means that if you need to access cash quickly, your art investment could become a long-term commitment. In many cases, you may have to wait years before you see a return on your investment, which can be frustrating, especially if market conditions shift unexpectedly. In other words, don’t expect to cash out quickly on this one!

The Cost of Doing Business

Funds must sell the artworks to make a profit, and while there are several ways to do this, the simplest methods often come with a steep price tag.

Selling art through dealers is the most popular way to dispose of artworks. Dealers typically take a commission falling between 10% and 30%. For high-value works or well-known artists, commissions may be on the lower end. Exclusive agreements often result in higher commissions, while non-exclusive arrangements can offer a slightly lower rate.

Auction houses are the second most popular method for selling privately held collections. However, auctions are synonymous with high costs, particularly the buyer's premium—a fee added to the final sale price of art.

These premiums typically range from 15% to 30% depending on the sale price of an artwork, and are paid by the winning bidder. While investors don’t directly pay this fee, it impacts the final price at which the artwork is sold. For instance, if a piece of art sells for $1 million, a 26% buyer’s premium could add an additional $260,000 to the buyer’s total cost.This can reduce the pool of interested buyers, as some may be discouraged by the extra cost and opt to look for less expensive works elsewhere.

Ultimately, the impact of buyer’s premiums and commission fees can reduce the overall return on investment, making art seem less profitable than it initially appears.

Art is Locked Away, Not Enjoyed

One of the most ironic aspects of art investment funds is that the artworks they acquire are often stored away in private vaults or warehouses, far from the investor and the public eye. Unlike traditional collectors who proudly display their treasures for all to admire, the art owned by these funds remains hidden. This lack of accessibility not only deprives investors of enjoying the artwork but also limits the cultural and emotional connection that art fosters when it is displayed.

Art’s true value extends beyond its potential for financial gain; it lies in its cultural and emotional significance. People connect with art in deeply personal ways—through its beauty, history, or the messages it conveys. When art is locked away, that connection is lost. Investors in art funds miss the chance to experience the pieces they own, and society loses the broader cultural engagement that comes with publicly displayed art.

After all, why would an art lover invest in a fund that hides the very treasures they seek to celebrate? This practice undermines the intrinsic and social value of art.

Art is Subject to Market Volatility

The art market is notoriously volatile. Unlike traditional investments, where assets are influenced by broader financial markets, the value of art is highly subjective and can fluctuate drastically.

Art prices are driven by a variety of factors, including market trends, the reputation of the artist, and the availability of a pool of willing buyers. What might be seen as a highly valuable investment today could easily lose its appeal tomorrow, leading to unpredictable results.

Art doesn't follow a predictable growth pattern. The art market is driven by whim, speculation, and social dynamics, making it a high-risk investment. And as the value of art is often tied to the personal tastes and opinions of wealthy buyers, the price of a given piece can swing unpredictably, further complicating the investment process.

The Art World’s Lack of Transparency

The art market is also notorious for its lack of transparency. Art valuations are subjective, and the true value of a piece can be difficult to determine. In contrast to traditional financial markets, which are regulated and follow established pricing models, the art market is far more opaque. This lack of transparency makes it difficult for investors to fully understand the pricing mechanisms at play.

Without clear valuation standards, art is more susceptible to speculation, inflated prices, and insider deals.

For investors who aren’t well-versed in the intricacies of the art world, this lack of transparency can be a significant risk. It's easy to be misled or confused about the true value of a piece, leaving investors exposed to financial losses without a clear understanding of how or why the artwork’s price fluctuated.

Are Art Investment Funds Really Worth It?

Despite the appeal of art investment funds, they often fail to live up to their promises. While they offer the potential for high returns and the prestige of owning valuable artworks, they come with a range of significant challenges. Lack of liquidity, buyer’s premiums, and the inability to truly enjoy the art you own all add layers of complexity to the investment process.

Furthermore, the art market is unpredictable and often operates in an opaque manner, making it a risky financial venture.

Ultimately, art’s true value goes beyond its price tag. Art should be appreciated for its cultural, emotional, and historical significance; values that are often overlooked in the pursuit of profit. While art investment funds may provide a way to tap into the art market, they fail to capture the deeper experience of art, reducing it to just another money-making venture. Before investing in an art fund, it’s essential to weigh the challenges and risks carefully. Art is not only about the money; it's about the experience and connection it offers.

Growth, as I’ve come to understand, is not easy, and healing is never a straightforward path. But I’m proud of the progress I’ve made. Today, I make better decisions, I’m truer to myself, and I’m more mindful of those around me. After all, we attract what we project.

As I’ve worked on self-acceptance, I’ve noticed a shift in the quality of  people I attract into my life, and perhaps it’s true that the good things we seek only come to us when we begin to look inward, heal our wounds, and change how we see ourselves. This brings me to a concept that has been on my mind lately: the self-portrait.

The Mirror to the Soul

The self-portrait, as an art form, is fascinating because it serves as both a reflection of the artist’s inner world and a deliberate expression of how they wish to be seen by the world. 

In many ways, a self-portrait is a visual autobiography—an exploration of identity and change. When I think about the self-portrait I would paint of myself today, I realize it would show a much more introspective, discerning, and grounded person than I was in years past. The self-portrait, in essence, acts as a mirror to our inner lives: it’s an expression of who we are at a given moment, but it’s also a glimpse of who we are becoming.

Drawing inspiration from James Hall’s excellent essay The Self-Portrait (2014), I now understand why this genre has endured as an essential form of artistic expression. The self-portrait shows us how artists see themselves relative to the world around them.

A Display of Strength

At its core, the self-portrait is an expression of introspection. As Hall explains, it is not just a physical likeness but a window into the artist’s psychology, emotions, and social context. Over the centuries, self-portraits have ranged from confident displays of power to quiet moments of vulnerability. 

Take, for example, Albrecht Dürer’s Self-Portrait at 28, a striking work in which Dürer gazes directly at the viewer with unwavering confidence, signaling an acute awareness of the power of self-representation. At the time, artists were often regarded as craftsmen rather than intellectuals, but Dürer uses this self-portrait to elevate his role, positioning himself as a learned creator on par with scholars and philosophers.

His fine attire—particularly the fur-lined coat—symbolizes his growing social and professional stature, marking him as a figure of wealth, intellect, and distinction. The deliberate pose of his hands further reinforces this duality: the right hand placed assertively on the canvas frame reflects his active engagement with his work, while the left hand, more contemplative, suggests a reverence for the intellectual and spiritual dimensions of creation. 

Dürer’s self-portrait is not merely a likeness—it’s a powerful statement of his self-awareness as an artist and intellectual, positioning him as a key figure in the broader cultural and intellectual landscape of the Renaissance.

A Glimpse of Vulnerability

In contrast to Dürer’s confident, intellectual self-assurance, Rembrandt’s self-portraits offer a more intimate and evolving exploration of self-perception. Created over the course of his lifetime, Rembrandt’s self-portraits reveal a profound relationship between the artist and the passage of time, making them some of the most psychologically rich depictions of the self in art history.

As Hall notes, Rembrandt’s expressions shift dramatically—from the youthful self-assurance of his early works to the somber introspection and melancholy of his later years. This evolution reflects the unfolding of his life, as he faced personal hardships such as financial struggles, the loss of loved ones, and a series of professional setbacks.

Through his self-portraits, Rembrandt transforms the genre into a space for confronting not just the passage of time (and ageing), but the internal changes wrought by personal experiences, struggles, and growth. His later self-portraits, in particular, offer us a glimpse of an artist who is no longer just reflecting his external appearance but is using his image to confront his inner emotional landscape.

Self-Portraiture Today

Today, self-portraiture has taken on new forms, largely due to the rise of social media. The "selfie" has become ubiquitous, offering a way for people to curate and control their own image. While selfies may lack the technical depth of traditional self-portraits, they’ve democratized the art of self-representation, allowing everyone—regardless of their background or profession—to shape how they are seen by others through this medium.

However, this shift also raises important questions about authenticity. Are these new forms of self-representation truly reflective of who we are, or are they just performances for an audience? In the digital age, we find ourselves navigating a complex intersection between personal identity and public image. The stakes are higher than ever, and the desire to project a specific version of oneself remains central to the self-portrait, whether in the traditional realm of art or through a digital lens.

As I continue my own journey of self-improvement, I see the self-portrait as a powerful symbol of this change. Self-portraiture is more than looking at who we are in the present; it’s about understanding where we’ve been, where we’re headed, and how we want to show ourselves to the world. The self-portrait is a mirror to the soul.. Just as Dürer, and Rembrandt used self-portraiture to navigate their identities and place in society, we too can use the concept of the self-portrait as a tool for self-reflection and personal growth.

That being said, there may be another truth lurking behind this genre. 

What if painted nudes, far from being purely aesthetic masterpieces, were created with a deeper, more troubling motive? What is certain is that these images were not created in a vacuum: they were shaped by the social structures and power dynamics of their time. I would go as far as to argue that these images reflect the ways in which women have been historically objectified by male patrons and artists alike.  

Living for the Male Gaze 

To understand how nudes exist for the male gaze, we must address the following question: what exactly is objectification?

Simply put, women are objectified when they are solely defined by their physical appearance or sex appeal, and reduced to nothing more than something to be looked at, touched, or admired—rather than being seen as complete and complex human beings with thoughts, emotions, and agency.

Objectification essentially presumes an indifference to who any one woman really is. In this process, women’s individuality, thoughts, and emotions are erased, leaving them as passive, one-dimensional figures meant to serve someone else's desires.

Waiting to be Seen

Classical nudes are far from neutral depictions of the female form; they were created through and for the male gaze, reinforcing the objectification of women. Often commissioned by male patrons for private viewing, these artworks allowed the female body to be admired in solitude, free from public judgment. This intimate setting amplified the male owner’s control over the image, reducing the woman to an object of desire and perpetuating the power dynamics central to the male gaze.

As John Berger explains in the third essay of Ways of Seeing (1972), "Men look at women. Women watch themselves being looked at." In this way, women come to view themselves as objects to be observed—essentially reducing themselves to mere sights.

Take Titian’s Venus of Urbino, for example. This painting shows a reclining woman gazing directly at the viewer. The way she is positioned—soft, languid, and vulnerable—invites admiration and desire. Her body is not only the focal point of the image, but also carefully constructed to appeal to male sensibilities. Her direct gaze seems to beckon the viewer to enjoy her beauty, reinforcing the idea that she solely exists for the male viewing pleasure. This positioning embodies the male gaze in art: the woman is passive, exposed, and objectified for the viewer’s admiration, while the viewer holds the power. Venus is aware of her role as an object to be seen.

Similarly, in Diego Velázquez's The Rokeby Venus, the nude Venus lies on a divan, her back to the viewer, gazing into a mirror. Her exposed body, with its soft, sensual curves, is designed to evoke desire, but the pose and the act of looking into the mirror suggest she is not an active participant in her own story. Rather, she lays there, waiting to be gazed upon, she cannot act or engage the viewer. Interestingly, this scene not only depicts the viewer treating the woman as an object of desire, but also shows the female subject seeing herself as nothing more than a sight, as she gazes at her reflection in the mirror. The passive nature of her depiction exemplifies the way art has historically positioned women as static objects to be consumed by a male patron.

Nudity or Nakedness?

The male consumption of the female form in art becomes clearer when we distinguish between "nudity" and "nakedness." Nudity is a deliberate state of undress, created specifically to cater to the male gaze and invite admiration, while nakedness refers to a more natural, unidealized state, where a woman’s body is not objectified or subject to external scrutiny—she is simply naked in private. In other words, nudity is for display, while nakedness is personal and unobserved.

In Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres’s The Turkish Bath, the idealized female form is presented in a reclining position, with exaggerated curves meant to delight the viewer’s eyes. The women in this image are not portrayed as natural, real people but as perfectly sculpted figures solely meant to evoke beauty and desire. The figure in the foreground, in particular, is not simply naked—she is nude, carefully constructed for the viewer's pleasure, with no sense of intimacy or naturalism.

In contrast, Édouard Manet’s Olympia presents a more confrontational kind of nude. The woman is directly looking at the viewer with an assertive expression, challenging the passive, idealized nudes of the past. Unlike the women in earlier works, she is not demure or shy—she is aware of her viewer, directly engaging him, thus refusing to be reduced to a simple object of male desire. Ironically, while Manet’s Olympia appears to assert some agency, she is still an object wainting to be “seen”, challenging the male gaze without but fully escaping it.

Commodities Ready for Consumption 

Objectification and nudity are closely tied to commodification. The nude transcends its role as an artistic form to become a product—something to be bought, sold, and consumed. In this process, the female subject is stripped of agency and reduced to a mere spectacle, existing solely for the gaze and pleasure of others.

For instance, the painting Gabrielle d'Estrées et une de ses soeurs shows the mistress of King Henry IV of France, Gabrielle d'Estrées, in an intimate and provocative moment with her sister - perhaps satisfying some secret desire of King Henry IV. The mistress’ nudity can also be seen as a sign of submission - to the King who “owned” both woman and painting. Here, the scene blends portraiture with eroticism, emphasizing Gabrielle d’Estrées’ beauty and reinforcing the power dynamics where she exists solely to be admired and consumed by the King. Simply put, this image was only created to flatter the King.

The commodification of the female body in European nudes is further exemplified by Ingres’s La Grande Odalisque (1814). The painting shows a woman lying on a bed, her elongated, exaggerated body a fantasy for the viewer’s eyes. The exotic setting and the luxuriously rendered details—her skin, her jewels, and the fine textures of the bed—are all designed to create a fantasy of allure and submission.

The woman’s nudity is not meant to depict any kind of natural, intimate experience but is a carefully constructed, commodified image created to match the luxury and splendor of her imagined surroundings. She is, literally, a commodity within the artwork - not too far removed from her ostentatious headwear.

Beyond History, Into the Present 

Critiques of classical art may seem like a thing of the past, but their implications remain deeply relevant today. The power dynamics that shaped the portrayal of women in European nudes continue to influence how women are represented in contemporary media, advertising, and popular culture.

In magazines, films, and on social media, women are often depicted as passive objects of desire, reinforcing outdated stereotypes about beauty and value. In the music industry, female artists are pressured to "show some skin" and adopt hyper-sexualized personas, with their talent overshadowed by their appearance. On Instagram, influencers edit their images to conform to unrealistic beauty standards. Even on magazine covers, women are airbrushed and slimmed down, sending the message that a woman’s worth is defined by her looks. This pressure to conform to an idealized version of beauty reduces women to visual commodities, reinforcing the idea that women solely exist for others to gaze upon.

Understanding how women were portrayed in classical nudes helps us recognize how these power dynamics have shaped not just art, but the broader societal treatment of women.

The next time you encounter a classical nude—whether it’s Titian's Venus of Urbino, Velázquez's The Rokeby Venus, or Ingres's La Grande Odalisque—consider the layers beneath the surface. These paintings aren’t just depictions of beauty; they are products of a system that objectified the female form, a legacy that still shapes how women are seen (and unseen) today.

When I sit down to write, it usually begins with a feeling. It could be a sudden rush of emotion, a memory that pops up unexpectedly, or even something I experience in the moment. From there, I search for something—a thought, a piece of philosophy, an artwork—that resonates with that feeling. Then, I let it all come together, putting my thoughts into words, and—voilà! I hit "publish," and share it with you.

Process doesn’t just apply to writing. In the world of art, it’s the artist’s method, their way of creating. Yet, there’s more to it. Process also describes how artists gain recognition—how they navigate the labyrinth of fame, fortune, and public perception. Tom Wolfe, renowned author and thinker,  talks about this a lot. He calls it “The Dance.” His take on how modern artists rise to fame is fascinating - so much so that I am sharing it with you. 

The Painted World

Tom Wolfe was a sharp thinker, a writer who deeply appreciated visual art and had a lot to say about the “dance” artists do to secure their place in the art world. In his essay, The Painted World (1975), he paints a vivid picture of his own art journey and that of the emerging artist. He recalls standing in front of the works of Pollock, de Kooning, Rothko, and others, “squinting, waiting for the visual reward to come to him.” His interest wasn’t just in the artwork itself, but in the process—the artist’s journey to recognition.

Wolfe argues that this journey has evolved over time, becoming more exclusive, more competitive, and, in many ways, more dependent on trends in the market. The artist’s “dance” is their attempt to capture the art world’s attention, hoping to be seen, understood, and celebrated.

From Court to Café

Wolfe traces the evolution of this artist’s “dance” back to two critical shifts in history: once in the 18th century, and again in the 20th century.

In the 18th century, the artist’s world was the royal Court. It was the realm of the elite—patrons who would support an artist’s work in exchange for a certain level of social prestige. Then, with the rise of the bourgeoisie, the artists’ stage shifted to the private salons of the wealthy middle class. These were gatherings of artists and intellectuals, and they were, surprisingly, not all that removed from the bourgeoisie they critiqued. Wolfe calls these artists the “gentlemen”—educated, privileged people who devoted their time to the arts. They did not need to dance for recognition as they were already part of the exclusive elitist circle of the upper class.

After the French Revolution, artists moved away from these salons into more vibrant, inclusive spaces: the cénacles. These were informal, bohemian gatherings, often in cafés and bistros, where artists of all classes would come together to talk, debate, and create. This was a rebellious, radical time—artists sought to not just create but to critique the emerging modern world. They lived to shock, challenge, and reject the old bourgeois norms, even as they still hovered in proximity to the wealth and power they critiqued.

The Boho Dance

Fast forward to the 20th century, and you have the modern version of this artistic journey—the “Boho Dance.” Artists of this time lived in neighborhoods like SoHo in New York or Montmartre in Paris, places where the art world and the wealthy elite intersected. They weren’t just creating; they were trying to become names—names that curators, gallerists, and journalists would speak about, write about, and ultimately elevate.

Wolfe describes this period as one where the Bohemian artist was both dismissive of the establishment and desperately trying to be noticed by it. In the 1960s, the “Boho Dance” became a strange back-and-forth between underground artists and museum curators. Wolfe recalls how curators from the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) would venture into the downtown lofts of up-and-coming artists, looking for something fresh and groundbreaking. But the moment they arrived? The “boho radar” was on. Artists knew they were coming, and a game of seduction—of validation—began.

Artists showed their work with a cool, “I don’t care” attitude, hoping it would make them stand out. Ironically, this stance was a clever way to signal that they did care—that they wanted the validation and fame that came with it.

The Consummation

Eventually, the “Boho Dance” led to what Wolfe calls the Consummation—the moment when an artist breaks through and finds themselves recognized by the higher echelons of the art world. This wasn’t just about talent; it was about originality, novelty, and being picked by the right people. Wolfe notes that success in the art world wasn’t as much about public demand as it was about curators and critics choosing which artists to promote.

Take Picasso, for instance. His rise to fame was a combination of raw talent and pure timing. He spent much of his life struggling, painting in obscurity. Then, after creating set designs for Diaghilev’s Russian Ballet in London, his fortunes changed almost overnight. Suddenly, he was on the radar of the art world’s elite, securing a place in the Savoy Hotel.

The Game is Rigged

Fast forward to today, and not much has changed in the art world. Yes, talent still plays a crucial role, but so does timing, positioning, and—let’s be honest—a bit of luck. Wolfe argues that the idea that public opinion influences which artists succeed is a “romantic fiction.” In reality, it’s the art world’s insiders—the curators, the gallerists, the critics—who dictate what is seen, what is valued, and what becomes “art.”

It’s a world that operates in its own bubble, largely disconnected from the public. Artists aren’t creating for the masses; they’re creating for those who can see them, validate them, and ultimately elevate them. And when they’re picked? The world follows.

The “Pick Me” Paradox 

The process through which art becomes “worthy” of being displayed and sold is, unfortunately, exclusive, biased, and often completely disconnected from the public’s taste. It’s a dance—a constant push and pull between the artist, the curator, and the ever-changing currents of the art market. The artist must simultaneously be a performer and a rebel—resisting societal norms while embracing the structures that lead to fame and success.

In the end, to be a Modern Artist is to master the art of not caring, while caring deeply enough to be noticed.

Interestingly, surrealist art resonates deeply with Frankfurt’s thesis, offering a visual manifestation of the complexities surrounding authenticity and illusion. Surrealism and Frankfurt both invite us to question what we perceive empirically, or through our senses, and to look beyond the surface. So here I am, attempting to share how these ideas intertwine and challenge our perceptions of truth.

What is Bullshit?

At its core, Frankfurt’s definition of bullshit hinges on indifference to truth. He argues that while liars are aware of the truth they distort, those who engage in bullshit disregard it entirely. This makes bullshit particularly insidious; it thrives on superficiality and illusion, often creating a façade, or an impression, that obscures reality. In a society increasingly driven by image and appearances—via social media, advertising, and political rhetoric—the implications of Frankfurt's argument resonate more than ever.

A heated political speech - think Hitler or Mussolini, for instance - does not aim to say how the world is in reality. Its sole purpose is to make the speaker sound like a patriot, and a “protector” of the people, who holds the populace’s best interests at heart. This is how most politicians want to be perceived, however, it may not be the reality of what they “are”. For Frankfurt, bullshit is about a hoped-for short-term effect that will benefit the bullshitter, with total disregard for durability. The bullshit artist does not purposefully lie, but rather, spins facts in a manner that supports or justifies a rhetoric, ideology, agenda, etc. In this sense bullshit is defined by perception and illusion. 

Subversing Reality

Now that we have covered the concept of bullshit, let us take a look at how the subversion of reality is represented in visual art. Their works often defy logic and provoke a sense of wonder, leading us to question what is real and what is an illusion. In this sense, surrealism serves as a visual counterpart to Frankfurt's ideas: it draws attention to the constructed nature of reality and challenges us to discern truth from deception.

Juxtaposing Truth and Illusion

One of the hallmarks of surrealist art is its ability to juxtapose contrasting elements, creating a visual tension that elicits feelings of uneasiness and disorientation. For instance, Magritte's The Treachery of Images features a pipe with the declaration "Ceci n'est pas une pipe". This illustration challenges our assumptions about representation, emphasizing the difference between an object and its depiction - we see something and yet we are told it is not reality. This interplay mirrors Frankfurt's assertion that bullshit often obscures the truth by focusing on surface impressions rather than a genuine understanding of truth. Do not take what you see at face value!

Dalí’s The Persistence of Memory, another hallmark of surrealist art, presents melting clocks in a dreamlike landscape, prompting us to grapple with the fluidity of time and reality. By presenting clocks that appear to be melting, Dalí confronts viewers with a paradox. These clocks represent time, yet their distorted forms suggest that what we consider "real" can be manipulated. Time is melting, which means it’s not a fixed, absolute concept as we typically think of it. Instead, it’s a subjective experience that can vary based on perception.The best way to illustrate this subjectivity would be to say that time goes “slowly” when we are young, and it moves “faster” as we age.

This illusion casts doubt on the reliability of our perceptions and the truths we take for granted, echoing Frankfurt’s warning against accepting appearances at face value. Just as a bullshitter shapes narratives to fit a desired impression, surrealist artists construct visual worlds that challenge our perceptions and compel us to question what we accept as real.

Similarly, in Dalí’s The Hallucinogenic Toreador, the toreador’s figure appears distorted and moving, creating visual instability. This distortion suggests that reality can be warped and what we see is not as solid as it seems.

Additionally, the painting incorporates multiple overlapping images, such as hidden faces in the background, inviting us to see and simultaneously experience different iterations of the same figure. This repetition emphasizes the subjective nature of reality, highlighting how perception is personal and influenced by our own feelings and experiences. Essentially, reality can be perceived in multiple diverging manners by different viewers. This take on the subjectivity of perception and the subversion of reality is not far removed from Frankfurt’s premise on bullshit. As one of my good friends always says, there are always three versions of the truth “yours, mine, and reality”.

Challenging Conventions

Surrealism also serves as a critique of societal norms, much like Frankfurt’s critique of discourse. By subverting our visual expectations and pushing the boundaries of subject matter, surrealist artists expose the absurdities of everyday life. Max Ernst’s Celebes, featuring a giant mechanical elephant in a desolate landscape, evokes feelings of fascination and unease. This emphasis on what is mechanical rather than what is alive reflects the artificiality of the constructed world, echoing Frankfurt’s insights into how bullshit obscures the objective truth. Well spun narratives can often be more convincing than reality - as is this robotic figure posing as a live elephant.

As society grapples with misinformation and superficial narratives, surrealism invites us to confront the absurdities and contradictions that define our reality. Bullshit is everywhere in our modern world, largely because we’ve shifted from valuing “correctness” to prioritizing “sincerity.” In this relativistic environment, a well-articulated message can overshadow the truth simply because it feels sincere, even if it lacks objective correctness. This phenomenon makes surrealist art a compelling means of expressing the disillusionment that often arises from living in a world filled with such superficiality and distortion.

What to make of this?

In our current landscape, where the lines between truth and perception are increasingly blurred, the insights of Harry Frankfurt alongside the evocative power of surrealist art serve as essential tools for navigating the complexities of reality. As we dissect Frankfurt's concept of bullshit—its indifference to truth and the superficial narratives it spins—we find a striking parallel in the works of surrealist artists, who challenge our perceptions and compel us to question the authenticity of our experiences. Through the distorted forms and dreamlike imagery of artists like Dalí and Magritte, we are reminded that what we see is not always what is real, and that our interpretations can be heavily influenced by context and emotion.

Ultimately, both Frankfurt's philosophical inquiries and surrealism invite us to engage in a deeper reflection on the nature of truth. They challenge us to peel back the layers of illusion that permeate our daily lives, encouraging us to seek authenticity amid the chaos of modern discourse.

One of the clearest ways to understand how subject matter in oil paintings revolves around objectification—specifically showcasing wealth and status—is through a quote from anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss that Berger includes in his fifth essay: “It is the avid and ambitious desire to take possession of the object for the benefit of the owner or even the spectator which seems to me to constitute one of the outstandingly original features of the art of Western civilization.” This statement underscores how the material wealth depicted in these paintings is simultaneously designed for patrons to flaunt and viewers to admires, reinforcing the strong link between art as a vehicle for displaying social status.

Possession: A Reflection of Identity

European oil paintings often act as mirrors, reflecting the material wealth of the patrons who commissioned them. The subject matter goes beyond simple images; the carefully selected objects in each scene symbolize the possessions and status of their owners. In Vermeer’s iconic Girl with a Pearl Earring, for example, the pearl earring itself serves as a powerful emblem of wealth and social standing. Our attention is deliberately drawn to this object, highlighting the connection between personal identity and material possessions. The woman wears the earring because either the patron or the artist has chosen to present her as someone of high social status.

As Berger succinctly states, “Oil paintings often depict things that are buyable… to have a thing painted and put on a canvas is not unlike buying it and putting it in your house.” This phrase illustrates how the subject matter was intentionally chosen to represent the wealth of the patron, who displayed the painting in their home, private chapel, or another venue.

During the Renaissance, affluent merchants in Italian city-states were eager to commission artworks that showcased their riches. Take Titian’s Assumption of the Virgin, for instance. While the painting exalts the divine, it also elevates the status of its patrons. The opulence captured in the artwork—golden robes, rich textures, and elaborate settings—reflects the material success of those who commissioned it. Italian patrons viewed painters as agents who would help affirm their ownership of all that is “beautiful and desirable” in the material world.

Through these examples, it becomes clear that European oil paintings are more than artistic expressions; they are vehicles for the patron to demonstrate their possession of goods, thus hinting at privilege and power, ultimately revealing the underlying values and hierarchies of the society that produced these visuals.

Access to Foreign Goods: A Reflection of Wealth

In 16th and 17th century Dutch art, the focus often shifted to merchandise - goods produced overseas and imported by boat to places like Delft, Antwerp and Amsterdam - reflecting the lives of wealthy merchants eager to showcase their everyday extravagance. This gave rise to the genre known as "still life," exemplified by works like Still Life with a Lobster by De Heem. The meticulous detail in these paintings—showcasing fine tableware, fruits, and other luxurious items—acts as a visual testament to the wealth and refined tastes of the patrons who displayed them in their homes. Here, the scene features rare items like citrus fruits, underscoring the merchant class's affluence and their global connections.

The items depicted in these still lifes frequently originated from distant lands, highlighting the extensive trade networks of the Dutch Golden Age. Silks from the East, spices from the Indies, and exotic fruits from warmer climates were all incorporated into these works. For instance, Clara Peeters’ still lifes, showcase dates, nuts and other foreign edibles, emphasizing the importance of international trade as a prerequisite of secular wealth.

These still lifes tell the story of a rising Dutch social class that thrived on international trade. The ability to acquire such exotic goods signified not only increased purchase power, but also an emerging class within Dutch society, as merchants became influential figures in the economy and politics of the Dutch Republic. Thus, the still life genre celebrates material possessions while reflecting broader economic and social dynamics, showcasing how access to foreign goods elevated the merchant class and redefined social hierarchies.

Knowledge: A Mark of Intellect and Privilege

Material wealth was not the only marker of status. Knowledge also emerged as a significant symbol of prestige. Historically, knowledge was primarily a privilege of the affluent, often viewed as a commodity that could enhance one's social standing. Patrons frequently chose to be depicted alongside visual references to Greco-Roman culture, which connoted sophistication and erudition.

A striking example is Zoffany’s Mr. Towneley and Friends, where intellectual discourse among the figures conveys not only their wealth but also their cultivated knowledge. The inclusion of books, classical sculptures, and philosophical references suggests that these patrons were not just wealthy; they were educated individuals who valued learning and culture. This intellectual engagement elevated their societal standing, marking them as enlightened members of the upper class.

Works like Thomas Gainsborough’s Mr. and Mrs. Andrews highlight the subjects' affluence and their status as members of the landed gentry. The vast estate in the background serves as a powerful marker of social standing, illustrating how land ownership was closely associated with prestige and power.

Green gardens and well-maintained grounds suggest not only wealth but also an appreciation for nature, portraying the owners as refined and sophisticated. Including elements like livestock or crops emphasizes the landowner’s connection to their estate, presenting them as responsible stewards of their wealth and heritage.

Ultimately, these depictions serve as visual affirmations of power, reinforcing the notion that land ownership was central to status and influence during this period.

Paintings from this era convey multifaceted messages through their chosen subjects. Berger’s assertion that European oil painting from the 16th to the 18th century is deeply concerned with possession, wealth, and status is evident in the works commissioned by patrons to immortalize their affluence.

The Victorian era, characterized by a unique blend of industrial progress and social upheaval, gave rise to a cultural obsession with all things synonymous with medieval Gothic - gargoyles, demons, and the supernatural. This revival wasn’t just a stylistic choice; it was a profound reflection of the anxieties and complexities of a rapidly changing 19th century English society. 

From the chilling narratives of Gothic novels to the haunting imagery in the paintings of Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898), Everett Millais (1829-1896), and William Blake (1757-1827), the Victorian Gothic movement encapsulated a rich interplay between literary and artistic expressions that echoed a fascination with the supernatural and the otherworldly.

A Very English Trend

At its core, Gothic revival represented a romanticized interest in England’s medieval past (namely glorified tales of King Arthur). This 19th-century trend celebrated the perceived benefits of a bygone era, emerging as a reaction against the rigid rational structures of Neoclassicism. As the movement evolved, it became a powerful symbol of social and political freedom, pushing back against the perfected efficiency that the Industrial Revolution promoted.

Many found solace in a nostalgic return to the collaborative spirit of artisans and craft laborers who had once built the nation’s magnificent pre-Reformation cathedrals and manors. In an age dominated by the dark, mechanized realities of industrial life, Gothic Revival offered an escape—a way to reconnect with a sense of community and artistry that seemed lost amidst the hustle and bustle of urbanization. This yearning for the past enriched the cultural fabric of the era and inspired a broader quest for freedom and creativity.

The Gothic trend permeated all areas of creative expression, from architecture to literature. It inspired tales of horror, romance, and psychological depth in novels like The Castle of Otranto, Wuthering Heights, and Dracula, while also finding its way into paintings depicting haunting figures in medieval scenes.

A Cultural Fascination with the Macabre

The supernatural, a main theme of Victorian Gothic, became a vehicle for writers and artists to explore madness, obsession, and moral decay. The uncanny— or rather, the familiar made strange—pervaded both the literary and artistic landscapes, resonating deeply in the works of writers who sought to illustrate the conflict between the known and the unknown. Gothic novels introduced readers to dark castles, supernatural occurrences, and the exploration of deep human emotions, elements that became staples of the genre.

Interestingly, these novels eventually evolved into tales of horror, romance, and psychological depth. Authors like the Brontë sisters, Bram Stoker and Oscar Wilde crafted stories that not only entertained but also provoked reflections on the conflicts between civilization (rationality and order) and primal instincts (feeling and intuition). These tales set in decaying mansions, eerie landscapes, and haunted castles created rich backdrops for exploring the reader’s deepest fears and desires.

A Newfound Interest in Arthurian Legend

While literature grappled with the complexities of the human psyche, Gothic revival in art provided visual representations of death and the supernatural. Artists and architects drew inspiration from medieval styles, resulting in ornate buildings adorned with gargoyles, intricate stained glass, and evocative illustrations that echoed the atmosphere of Gothic literature.

The general longing for the medieval past coupled with a fascination for mysterious tales naturally led Victorian artists towards Arhutian legend. This romanticized view of the medieval era placed King Arthur and his knights on pedestals, framing them as ideals of heroism, chivalry, and community, a stark contrast to the harsh realities of rising individualism and industrialization.

One prominent figure in this artistic revival was Edward Burne-Jones, a leading member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. His works evoke mystery and enchantment, reflecting the psychological thrill of Gothic novels. Take, for instance, The Beguiling of Merlin which captures the moment when the sorceress Morgana lures Merlin into a trance. This moment embodies themes of enchantment, seduction, and the conflict between reality and illusion—hallmarks of Gothic storytelling. The painting’s rich, dark palette and intricate details create an otherworldly and dreamlike realm, inviting us to ponder the interplay between the magical and the mundane.

Death and Tragedy

Another important theme in the Victorian Gothic is the beautification of death and tragedy. Artists were particularly interested in the inevitability of death, portraying figures in states of mourning or in the act of dying. One of the most striking examples is Ophelia by Sir John Everett Millais, inspired by Shakespeare’s Hamlet. This striking work captures the tragic moment of Ophelia’s drowning, surrounded by lush, ethereal flora. As she slips into the water while picking flowers, the symbolism of the blooms—poppies for death, daisies for innocence, and pansies for love in vain—highlights the simultaneous beauty and horror intertwined in her sad fate.

Unsurprisingly, the supernatural and the uncanny loom large in Victorian Gothic art. The Ghost of a Flea, painted by William Blake, exemplifies this obsession with haunting imagery and the exploration of the supernatural. The spectral figure depicted in the painting evokes an eerie, otherworldly presence, surrounded by dark, ethereal elements that suggest a connection to the afterlife. This work captures the fear and psychological turmoil associated with the unknown.

This visual representation of the supernatural tapped into the broader cultural anxieties of the time, where the boundaries between life and death, reality and fantasy, were increasingly blurred and questioned. Moreover, the painting's emotional intensity and the sense of unease it mirror the psychological depth found in Gothic literature, showcasing the complex interplay of fear, desire, and the uncanny that fascinated the Victorian audience. Through this exploration of fear the supernatural, The Ghost of a Flea embodies the Victorian spirit of the Gothic horror story, drawing on a general curiosity about what lies beyond our earthly realm.

As we dive into Halloween, it’s thrilling to explore how the Victorian Gothic revival connects to our modern festivities. While I might not be adorning my horns this coming 31st, the eerie narratives and haunting art from this era pique my interest. 

The Victorian fascination with the supernatural, the macabre, and the mysterious allure of the past resonates with our present Halloween spirit. From the chilling tales of Dracula and to the mesmerizing paintings of Burne-Jones, Millais and Blake, the themes of death, tragedy, and the uncanny remind us of the darker corners of human experience—perfect fodder for scary storytelling. 

Art works like Millais’s Ophelia and Blake’s The Ghost of a Flea invite us to confront our fears and engage with the unknown, much like the ghosts we love to summon during this time of year. So, as we revel in all things spooky, let’s celebrate the spirit of the Victorian Gothic, which not only enriches our Halloween experience but also encourages us to explore periods past.

This line of thought led me to a series of  "what ifs”: What if we lived in a world without governance, where no one dictated our actions, and concepts like taxes and wealth redistribution were absent? How would we navigate our lives? Would we rely solely on instincts and available resources to survive?

In practice, socio-economic realities influence our behaviors, and those behaviors, in turn, shape our modes of expression. Art, in particular, serves as a powerful mirror reflecting not only the artist's worldview but also the dominant ideas of their era. Throughout history, artists have illustrated the complexities of human behavior, especially in times of adversity or in imagined states of nature. In this post, I explore how these themes resonate across artistic expressions and what they reveal about our collective understanding of human nature and governance.

Chaos and Competition in the State of Nature

During the Enlightenment, philosophers and theorists debated various perspectives on human nature. One that particularly resonates with me is Thomas Hobbes’ portrayal of the state of nature in his Leviathan. Here, Hobbes presents a rather grim view of the state of nature: without a strong authority, society spirals into anarchy, where life is “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.” For Hobbes, governance is crucial to preventing this chaos.

While Hobbes' view may seem pessimistic, it holds a certain logic. Picture a world where everyone is fighting for survival. In such a scenario, resources are limited, making conflict not just likely but inevitable. Hobbes argues that without societal structures, humans are driven by self-interest, competition, and fear: “During the time men live without a common power to keep them all in awe, they are in that condition which is called war; and such a war as is of every man against every man.” In this environment, trust diminishes, and the instinct to protect oneself trumps cooperation.

This raises a critical question: what would motivate us to collaborate in such a hostile environment? With limited resources, individuals would find themselves in a relentless struggle for survival. As Hobbes suggests, without a central authority to maintain order, society collapses, allowing humanity's instincts to take over. His vision underscores the vital importance of governance and the social contract—an agreement among individuals to form a society that benefits us all.

Note that the practical form of this social contract is a highly contested topic— I leave this to your own intepretation! 

Instances of Societal Collapse

If Hobbes is right about the chaos that ensues in the absence of governance, how have artists interpreted this reality? Numerous artists have explored themes of darkness, survival, and the search for order (especially during turbulent times).

Take Francisco Goya (1746-1828), for example. His late 18th century works reflect the chaos of his time. In his series Los Desastres de la Guerra, Goya depicts the atrocities of the Peninsular War, fought between Napoleonic France and occupied Spain between 1808-1814, showcasing graphic scenes of violence and despair. His art illustrates that warfare is synonymous with societal collapse and the failure of social order. Times of war may reveal the validity of Hobbes' views on human nature, demonstrating that when governments fail, chaos inevitably follows.

Goya’s use of stark contrasts and haunting imagery compels us to grapple with the emotional weight of suffering and loss, reflecting the consequences of a society in disarray, and urging the need for social stability.

The Struggle for Survival 

Survival is difficult in times of societal collapse. No artist captures this struggle better than Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). In his engraving The Four Horsemen, the struggle for survival in a chaotic world is vividly illustrated through the symbolism of each horseman and accompanying imagery.

The first horseman, representing pestilence, conveys the pervasive fear of disease, emphasizing the emotional and psychological impacts of living under the threat of illness. The second horseman wields a sword that represents conflict and violence. His presence evokes the chaos of battle, where survival becomes a desperate fight against both physical threats and the psychological toll of fear. The third horseman, on a black horse and carrying a set of scales, embodies famine, highlighting the dire consequences of scarcity and the struggle for basic necessities. This imagery reflects the imbalance and desperation that arise when resources dwindle, leading to conflict among individuals fighting for survival. Finally, the skeletal figure of Death serves as a stark reminder of mortality, illustrating that no matter the struggle, death ultimately claims all.

The chaotic landscape surrounding the horsemen amplifies this struggle for survival, with cloudy skies and general disarray enhancing the sense of disorder. As societal structures collapse, humanity faces overwhelming threats that challenge its very existence. 

Overall, The Four Horsemen serves as an allegory for the human experience in times of crisis, capturing the fears and challenges that define the struggle for survival amid strife and mortality. This struggle can only be eased by establishing some form of social order. Many artists after Dürer have highlighted the importance of order and effective governance, which brings me to my next point.

The Quest for Order

In contrast to the chaos depicted by Goya and Dürer, Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) illustrates the human longing for order and governance. His neoclassical works echo Hobbesian philosophy, emphasizing the necessity of structure to avert chaos. David’s art reflects a yearning for  both civic responsibility and government in maintaining social order.

For instance, in The Oath of the Horatii, David captures brothers preparing to fight for their city - Rome. This scene showcases the nobility of sacrifice for the greater good. The stoic expressions of the brothers convey a powerful sense of duty and solidarity, reinforcing Hobbes’ assertion that individuals must be incentivized to prioritize collective needs over self-interest to prevent anarchy. David’s depiction serves as a rallying cry for civic virtue, illustrating how strong governance is essential for fostering community and stability.

The need for self-imposed civic virtue is further illustrated in David’s The Death of Socrates. Here, Socrates’ calm acceptance of his fate shows the importance of reason and altruism in maintaining social order. His unwavering commitment to the laws of the state—even at the cost of his life—mirrors Hobbesian thought on the necessity of obeying authority to maintain societal stability and prevent descent into chaos. Through these narratives, David emphasizes the idea that order is not just a societal construct but a moral imperative.

What Does It All Mean?

Imagining a world stripped of reference points, rules, and altruism is unsettling. Hobbes’ philosophy compels us to consider the necessity of some form of governance. Artists throughout history have wrestled with these themes, capturing the stark realities of chaos and the enduring quest for order. Goya, Dürer, and David each, in their own ways, reflect the struggles of survival and the vital need for structure or good governance.These artistic interpretations remind us that while chaos lurks at the edges of society, the pursuit of order and collective responsibility remains crucial. 

Ultimately, the interplay between art, governance, and human nature is as relevant today as ever, urging us to consider the delicate balance between our human instincts and the frameworks we build to sustain civilization. Through the lens of history and art, we are reminded of the enduring tension between chaos and order, compelling us to navigate our modern existence with awareness and intentionality.

This brings me to today’s topic: existentialism and alienation in 20th century art.

Why is this relevant? Well, our lives are filled with endless work commitments and family obligations. We often rush through life without taking the time to connect with ourselves or others. That’s what I’m trying to do: learn about myself, share my experiences, and understand those around me. There’s a sacred beauty in human connection.

But truthfully, I work a lot, and outside of my job, I don’t really meet people. Perhaps that’s why I find solace in writing—it's a way to process these feelings of being a bit lost in the crowd. Maybe this is a form of alienation. 

Interestingly, the concept of alienation became particularly significant with the existential philosophy of the fast-moving 20th century. This movement inspired many artists to visually express the feelings that plague us all at various points in our lives. One such artist is Georges Seurat (1859-1891), a pioneering figure in the post-impressionist movement. Best known for his innovative pointillism, Seurat’s art might appear serene at first glance, but a deeper look reveals themes of existential angst and alienation. His work invites us to reflect on isolation, identity, and the search for meaning in our lives.

A Disconnect, from the Self and from Others 

At its core, alienation refers to a sense of estrangement. Existential thinkers like Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980) and Albert Camus (1913-1960) explored how modern life can leave individuals feeling disconnected from their true selves and from society around them. This disconnection can arise from various factors; societal expectations, the general absurdity of existence, and the search for meaning in a seemingly indifferent universe.

One of the most profound aspects of alienation is the feeling of being disconnected from one's own identity. In a world filled with pressures to conform we can lose sight of their authentic selves. It’s all about landing a better job, getting a better partner, making our families proud, etc. This internal conflict can lead to feelings of emptiness and confusion, prompting the existential question: Who am I really?

Existential alienation also manifests in our relationships with others. While we crave connection and understanding, we often find ourselves feeling isolated in busy places. Sartre famously stated “Hell is other people” in his play No Exit, highlighting the tension that can exist in interpersonal relationships. Loneliness can be felt even when surrounded by others because we exist, not for ourselves, but for others. This line refers to an alienation from ourselves, and from others. 

Despite the challenges that alienation presents, existential philosophy encourages us to confront these feelings head-on. By recognizing and embracing our alienation, we can begin to reclaim our sense of self and agency. This journey often involves seeking authenticity, fostering genuine connections, and creating our own meaning in a world that can feel indifferent. The Illusion of Connection and the Power of Perception

Back to art. Seurat is a master of illusion. In A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, he shows us Parisians enjoying a seemingly leisurely day. However, beneath the surface of this joyful gathering lies a sense of disconnection. The figures, while physically present, and surrounded by one another, appear alone and emotionally isolated. This reflects Sartre's key belief that even in social situations, people can feel profoundly disconnected from one another. 

The characters in Seurat’s works generally seem to embody existentialism, highlighting how societal settings can foster a sense of loneliness. Their rigid postures and blank expressions evoke a feeling of alienation, highlighting the struggle to forge genuine connections as an adult in a modern world.

Seurat’s use of color and light is not just a technical achievement; it also speaks to existential concerns about perception and reality. In works like Bathers at Asnières, the division of color into distinct dots challenges traditional representation and encourages viewers to consider the power of perception. 

This questioning of reality aligns with existentialist ideas about the subjective nature of experience. Sartre believed that life inherently lacks meaning and that individuals must create their own. The figures in Bathers at Asnières seem to float in a dreamlike state, evoking feelings of uncertainty amidst a fragmented reality.

The illusion of connection is exponentially amplified by Seurat’s innovative technique. In Seurat's pointillism, the dots of color create a dynamic interplay, reminding us that reality is not fixed but rather perceived differently by each observer. This connection underscores Sartre’s belief in the fluidity of existence and the importance of perspective.

Seurat’s take on perception aligns with Sartre's idea of existence preceding essence—individuals must define themselves through their choices and interpretations, rather than through the traditional expectations of the lived experience. In other words, find yourself, be yourself, and dismiss what other people want you to be. 

The Weight of Modern Life 

Seurat often depicted scenes of modern urban life to illustrate the disconnect arising from urban lifestyles. In Circus Sideshow, the characters are portrayed in a moment of stillness, yet their expressions convey a profound sense of longing and detachment. This painting reflects the existential struggle inherent in modernity, where people like us are often caught in the machinery of urban existence. 

The performers, despite being the center of attention, seem trapped in their roles, mirroring the idea that people are constantly putting on a spectacle. Set against the backdrop of a circus, Circus Sideshow highlights the paradox of city life: we are surrounded by others, yet we can experience profound isolation. The figures in this particular scene seem caught in the spectacle, emphasizing how the modern world can inadvertently reduce us to mere spectators of our own lives. Don’t just watch - live life and let life happen.

Take a Step Back to See Better 

The main takeaway here is that both Sartre and Seurat value authenticity and the pursuit of individuality. Sartre argues that we must confront the absurdity of being alive, and assert our individual freedom through authentic choices. Choices that feel right, choice that are separate from the spectacle of our lives. 

In the same vein, Seurat’s departure from traditional artistic conventions can be seen as an assertion of his individuality. His unique technique reflects a quest for authenticity in art, inviting us viewers to contemplate our own authentic selves amidst societal expectations.

To make choices that feel right, rather than just appearing right, we often need to take a step back and gain perspective. Seurat vividly illustrates this idea in his art through his pointillist technique. This approach requires us to step back and consider the painting as a whole, allowing us to appreciate the intricate details and overall composition fully. By doing so, we gain a deeper understanding—not just of the artwork, but of our own perspectives as well.

Ultimately, Seurat’s art and Sartre’s existential concerns converge in their exploration of alienation, perception, and authenticity. Seurat’s innovative approach to painting reflects the complexities of human experience that Sartre articulates in his written works, inviting us to confront our own feelings of isolation and our quest for meaning.

Art matters to us all; we can create it, appreciate it, and be moved by it. What is fascinating is how two people can gaze at the same painting and walk away with entirely different interpretations. Art is inherently emotional, subjective, and deeply personal. While art historians may argue that all art reflects its era and societal context, it’s crucial to emphasize that art is also profoundly personal. It holds significance for the artist who brings a vision to life and for the viewer who connects with it on an emotional level.

This is precisely why I chose to center my blog around art. It has the remarkable ability to evoke feelings in every one of us.

Today, I started drafting a piece on Renaissance iconography, but I found myself struggling to finish it. This is when I realized I wanted this particular post to be more than just an exploration of an era; I wanted it to delve into the significance of art itself. So here I am, ready to explore the many ways art moves us, makes us cry, brings us joy, and showcases the brilliance of human creativity.

The Artist’s Voice

The first way art becomes personal is through the artist’s expression of their thoughts and feelings. When an artist creates, they pour a part of themselves into their work—transforming their feelings into a visual or auditory language that speaks to others.

This deeply personal visual expression allows artists to communicate in ways that words often cannot. A painting might capture a fleeting moment of joy or a haunting memory, inviting viewers to step into the artist's world. Each work becomes a window into their psyche, revealing vulnerabilities and triumphs. 

To name one example, few artists have poured their heart and soul into their work as much as Frida Kahlo. Her art powerfully expresses both her physical and emotional pain. Through her evocative self-portraits, she confronts her suffering which stemmed from a traumatic accident and chronic illness. At just 18 years old, Kahlo was involved in a bus accident in Mexico City when her vehicle collided with a streetcar. The crash left her with severe injuries, including a fractured spine, pelvis, and several broken ribs, along with damage to her leg and foot. This traumatic experience led to multiple surgeries and a lifetime of chronic pain, profoundly shaping her artistic vision and personal identity. Each of her subsequent works reflected the complexities of her suffering. 

Paintings like The Broken Column and The Two Fridas reveal her emotional turmoil, utilizing bold colors and symbolic imagery to convey feelings of isolation, heartbreak, and resilience. Kahlo's unique ability to translate her vulnerabilities into art invites us viewers to empathize with her journey.

Another great example of how art can serve as a profound expression of an artist’s personal experience is Vincent van Gogh's Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear. In this self-portrait, van Gogh not only captures his physical likeness but also reveals his life-long struggle with mental health. The bandaged ear - a result of a tumultuous incident where the artist severed his own ear - symbolizes the deep inner turmoil that plagued his life.Through the intense gaze of the subject, van Gogh invites us into his psyche, unveiling his chaos and isolation. This painting transcends mere representation, transforming personal trauma into a universal exploration of pain.

Each of these works serves as a window into the artist's psyche, illustrating how art can communicate complex emotions and experiences beyond words. Art serves as a bridge between the artist’s expression and the viewer’s emotional response. It comes alive through a dynamic flow of thoughts, symbols, and feelings that originate with the artist and resonate with us viewers. This exchange allows us to connect—whether or not we relate to the artist's personal experience—transforming art into a shared emotional journey.

The Viewer’s Experience

Art holds immense importance for us viewers. Simply looking at visual art has the power to stir deep emotions and provoke thought. Art can serve as a mirror, reflecting our own experiences, often allowing us to see aspects of ourselves we may not fully understand. When we engage with a piece of art, we enter into a dialogue with the artist, their work, and ourselves.

Art has the remarkable ability to evoke a wide range of emotions—joy, sadness, nostalgia, anger, and tranquility - you name it. A breathtaking landscape, like Claude Monet’s series of Water Lilies, can transport us to a serene place, showcasing the tranquil beauty of a Giverny garden, with calm waters adorned by delicate water lilies and shimmering reflections.

In contrast, a historical warfare scene, such as Eugène Delacroix's The Death of Sardanapalus, elicits feelings of anxiety and fear. This dramatic composition portrays the Assyrian king in the throes of despair, using vivid colors to convey chaos and turmoil as the subject faces his demise. These emotional responses may seem polar opposites, yet both are cathartic and emotive.

More importantly, art can challenge our preconceived perspectives and inspire change. Art encourages us to question societal norms and engage with diverse viewpoints. For instance, Pablo Picasso’s Guernica confronts the brutality of violence and the suffering it inflicts on innocent civilians. Created in response to the bombing of the Basque town during the Spanish Civil War, this monumental painting captures the chaos and horror of war. This piece invites us to question the normalization of war, humanity's capacity for destruction, and the ethical implications of political conflict.

Through its silent visual dialogue, art fosters a sense of community and shared humanity, reminding us that we are not alone in our feelings and experiences. In this way, art becomes a vital tool for reflection, understanding, and connection, enriching our lives with much more than beauty.

Perhaps what I am trying to convey through this post is that art goes beyond mere aesthetics. It is a powerful medium that connects us to our humanity. Art invites us to feel, explore our emotions, question societal norms, and engage with the world around us. 

I encourage you to step into a museum, gallery, or even your local art space. Allow yourself to immerse in the stories and emotions that art has to offer. Take a moment to reflect on how each piece speaks to you, igniting your own impressions and feelings. In that moment, I was captivated by the artworks adorning the walls of the establishment. One colorful piece, in particular, strikingly evoked the style of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901), one of the most celebrated artists of the French Post-Impressionist movement who brilliantly captured the vibrant Paris nightlife of the late 19th century.

On that evening, the atmosphere around me felt as though it had sprung to life from one of his famous prints depicting nights in Montmartre. With his signature bright colors and flamboyant style, Toulouse-Lautrec invites us into this beautiful world of fleeting moments of joy, music, laughter - and perhaps a touch of hedonism.

Soirées de fin-de-siècle 

Montmartre was undeniably the hotspot for any late 19th-century Parisian socialite in search of entertainment and excitement. This lively district welcomed a diverse mix of people—artists, writers, performers, and spectators alike. They all flocked to its cafés, cabarets, and (dare I say) brothels. As both a participant in, and keen observer of, Montmartre’s vibrant nightlife, Toulouse-Lautrec found rich inspiration in this milieu, portraying the iconic can-can dancers, actresses, and singers of the era. His most celebrated works include large printed posters commissioned by the Moulin Rouge, an iconic venue that epitomized the vibrant and often risqué nightlife of fin-de-siècle Paris.

Toulouse-Lautrec’s work celebrated a host of vibrant personalities from the Parisian nightlife; among them the lively can-can dancer La Goulue, known for the theatricality of her performances, and the graceful singer and dancer Jane Avril. He also immortalized cabaret star Aristide Bruant, easily recognized by his distinctive red scarf and bohemian style. Toulouse-Lautrec’s poster of Bruant not only captured his essence but also conveyed the colorful spirit of Montmartre. Through these iconic figures, Toulouse-Lautrec masterfully documented the allure and excitement of Parisian nightlife.

Motion and Emotion 

What stands out in Toulouse-Lautrec’s works is the palpable emotion that emanates from his scenes. His subjects are always in motion, embodying feelings of joy, intoxication, and an exuberant appreciation for hedonism. For example, in one scene, William Tom Warrener, an artist and close friend of Lautrec, appears as a top-hatted gentleman engaged in conversation with two female companions at the Moulin Rouge. The women's suggestive poses and Warrener’s flushed ear hint at the provocative nature of their discussion.

In Toulouse-Lautrec’s art, the characters come alive through motions and movements. The gentleman is leaning forward as one of the ladies is stepping backwards. The subject’s feelings are almost tangible, ranging from the women's discomfort in this particular moment, to the sheer joy of dancing, vividly portrayed in Toulouse-Lautrec’s Moulin Rouge posters.

However, what truly sets Toulouse-Lautrec apart from his contemporaries is his ability to depict both the exuberance and the underlying melancholy of nightlife. He understood and depicted the darker aspects of the cabaret scene, revealing the fleeting nature of fame, the struggles of artists, and the ephemeral and fleeting joys of the night. His works allow us viewers to feel the simultaneous thrill and sadness or discomfort that intertwine within a same scene. 

From Canvas to Print

Toulouse-Lautrec’s innovations extended beyond composition and subject matter. His techniques and use of various mediums were groundbreaking for his time. Initially trained in traditional painting, he eventually embraced the bold, graphic style of posters, which transformed the perception and consumption of art in late 19th century Paris.

Posters proved to be the perfect medium for capturing the vibrant essence of Parisian nightlife. Unlike traditional painting, which often focused on detail and depth, posters demanded immediacy and clarity, enabling Toulouse-Lautrec to convey dynamic narratives in a quickly produced format. His works, particularly those for the Moulin Rouge, showcased bold lines, bright contrasting colors, and memorable compositions that effectively caught the public’s attention. This shift made art more accessible to the masses by serving as an early example of mass marketing, but also elevated commercial art to a respected form of expression.

Toulouse-Lautrec’s fascination with prints was no mere coincidence; it was deeply influenced by Japanese art, particularly the ukiyo-e prints that gained popularity in France during the Japonisme movement. This movement, which emerged in the mid 19th century following Japan's opening to the West in the 1850s, sparked a widespread interest in Japanese aesthetics across Europe, especially in France.

The Japonisme trend introduced artists and designers to a wealth of Japanese woodblock prints, textiles, and ceramics, inspiring them to incorporate these foreign elements into their own work. For Toulouse-Lautrec, these techniques resonated deeply with his themes of ephemeral nightlife and entertainment. He embraced the techniques of Japanese art, using flat areas of color and strong outlines to simplify forms and enhance color contrasts in his own creations. This integration of Japanese aesthetics allowed him to experiment with composition and perspective, often depicting figures at unusual angles or employing dramatic cropping—elements that added a sense of immediacy and dynamism to his scenes.

Enjoy the Moment!

Reflecting on that dinner party I was fortunate enough to attend, I recall the vibrant energy that enveloped the room— fleeting moments of laughter and joy that very much echoed the spirit of Toulouse-Lautrec's work. Much like my night, alive with the carefree essence of any vibrant soirée, Lautrec’s art immortalizes the exuberance and transience of nightlife.

What sets Lautrec apart is his remarkable ability to capture both the thrill and the underlying melancholy of these experiences. Each character in his scenes tells a story of simultaneous joy and struggle. Through his bold colors and striking compositions, Lautrec not only encapsulated the desire for entertainment and escape that defined his era, but also explored the complexity of human emotion arising from any social interaction.

Ultimately, Toulouse-Lautrec reminds us viewers to enjoy these ephemeral moments—whether in the bustling halls of the Moulin Rouge or our own modern gatherings. Remember to have some fun!

Unfortunately, these acts are often perpetrated by those we trust most: family members and partners who are supposed to offer love and support. 

It’s heartbreaking to consider the countless men and women who live through this trauma, and my heart goes out to each of them. What is particularly tragic is that survival stories often remain untold, fading into the background of our collective history.

Today, I want to shine a light on one remarkable artist who transformed her pain into powerful art. Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1653) faced what is perhaps the most violating and horrific event a woman could ever experience, yet she channeled her anger and resilience into masterpieces that continue to be applauded and resonate with many of us today.

Trials and Triumphs

Tragically, at the age of 17, Gentileschi was raped by a family friend, Agostino Tassi. Following the incident, she made the (very brave and difficult) decision to pursue a public trial against her attacker. This was groundbreaking for her time. The trial was harrowing, filled with invasive questioning, but it ultimately highlighted her strength and determination.

The trial opened in Rome in 1612, attracting much public attention. Both parties presented their cases in a court that was known for being hostile to female plaintiffs. During a brutal cross-examination session, Gentileschi faced intense and humiliating questioning as her character was closely scrutinized, and the defense aimed to undermine her credibility. Gentileschi was even subjected to a "torture test" to verify the veracity of her testimony. This brutal procedure involved her being suspended by her arms, in an effort to extract the truth about her claims. The court eventually found Tassi guilty of the charges against him in later that same year. He was sentenced to exile, but he, ironically, continued to live in Rome with no consequence, reflecting the leniency of the punishment.

Following the trial, Gentileschi transformed her trauma into art, using her personal experiences as inspiration. She chose to portray strong female figures in scenes centered around justice, often painting her own likeness as the main female character. Perhaps this was her way of asserting her agency in a 17th century male-dominated world. Gentileschi’s self-representations became poignant commentaries on the female experience, solidifying her legacy as a female artist who defied the societal norms of her time.  

Agency and Justice

Most of Gentileschi's works showcase brave women who defy societal constraints and seek to remedy injustice. Her female characters, often inspired by biblical or historical figures, are not passive; they are portrayed with strength and agency. 

Gentileschi's most celebrated work, Judith Slaying Holofernes, captures a pivotal moment in the biblical tale of Judith. In this gripping story, Judith, disguised and clever, enters the camp of the Assyrian invader and general Holofernes, and gains his trust during a lavish banquet. As he succumbs to drunkenness, Judith seizes her chance, and proceeds to swiftly behead him. This audacious act saves her city and inspires her people to rise against their oppressors. From this story, Judith emerges as a powerful symbol of feminine courage and cunning, embodying strength typically associated with male heroes.

Choosing to paint Judith at the moment of Holofernes’ beheading is a powerful statement. This striking imagery defies traditional portrayals of women as passive victims, highlighting instead that women possess the agency to reshape their own narratives. This portrayal is particularly striking given the context of Gentileschi's own experiences with violence and injustice. 

The theme of taking justice into one’s own hands in response to personal or societal wrongs is vividly depicted in this scene. Much like Judith, Gentileschi sought a calculated way to confront her attacker, symbolizing victory over oppression and the reclamation of agency. This focus on vengeance mirrors Gentileschi’s own fight for justice after her assault. Her portrayal of women avenging themselves against their oppressors resonates deeply, offering a powerful visual representation of the desire for justice that many women feel yet often struggle to achieve within societal constraints.

Truth and Resilience

Similarly, another one of Gentileschi’s main works, Susanna and the Elders, captures the struggle of a woman facing harassment and betrayal. In this biblical story, Susanna—a beautiful and virtuous woman—becomes the target of two lustful and much older men who seek to blackmail her after she rebuffs their advances. When she stands firm, they retaliate by falsely accusing her of infidelity, leading to her trial. In her moment of desperation, Susanna prays for justice. It is during this moment that the prophet Daniel enters the story, and questions the elders separately to reveal their lies. Ultimately, Susanna’s innocence shines through, and the elders face punishment, highlighting the triumph of truth and righteousness over deceit.

Gentileschi’s portrayal of Susanna shows the protagonist as both vulnerable and defiant, caught between her dignity and the threats posed by the older men. Here, Susanna embodies quiet strength and resilience. This theme of resilience is a recurring motif in Gentileschi’s work. By depicting her subjects as strong and resourceful, Gentileschi highlights the inner strength that all women possess, even in contexts where they are victimized. For me, each of Gentileschi’s masterfully crafted scenes are a testament to the ability of women to survive and persevere, no matter the challenges presented before them. 

Mastering the Craft

While Gentileschi is celebrated for her empowering compositions, she was also known as a true master of her craft. Her technical prowess rivaled that of renowned contemporaries like Caravaggio. 

The emotional intensity of each scene in Gentileschi's work is heightened by her masterful use of color and the Baroque technique of chiaroscuro, famously popularized by Baroque painters. This technique uses strong contrasts between light and shadow to create a sense of volume and depth, which amplifies the drama and tension of the depictions. 

For instance, in Judith Slaying Holofernes, Gentileschi uses chiaroscuro to create stark contrasts between light and shadow, and draw our eye to Judith and Holofernes’ expressions. The illumination on Judith's face and body highlights her determination and strength, while the shadows surrounding Holofernes create a sense of vulnerability. This technique not only enhances the three-dimensionality of the figures but also symbolizes the battle between light and darkness, virtue and vice. Thinkers like Jean-Jacques Rousseau celebrated the concept, suggesting that solitude could lead to a more authentic existence free from societal constraints. Indeed, Rousseau famously stated the following in his Reveries: “These hours of solitude and meditation are the only ones in the day when I am completely myself and my own master, with nothing to distract or hinder me, the only ones when I can truly say that I am what nature meant me to be”. This idea emphasized the individual experience, positing that moments of solitude fostered self-reflection and spiritual awakening, allowing each person to become in touch with their innermost thoughts.

In the realm of art, Romantic painters like Caspar David Friedrich depicted solitude through evocative landscapes. In works such as the Wanderer above the Sea of Fog,  solitary figures are set against vast, dramatic backdrops, symbolizing the struggle of the individual against overwhelming natural forces. Navigating the Waves of Anxiety and Alienation

In 19th and 20th century art, solitude served as a powerful reflection of the alienation experienced by those living in industrialized societies. As urbanization changed daily life, artists started to illustrate the deep disconnection and existential angst brought on by factory work, increased individualism, and overcrowded living conditions.

Edvard Munch’s iconic work, The Scream, captures this sense of despair, portraying a figure engulfed by an overwhelming sense of anxiety and isolation amidst a chaotic landscape. From my own experience, embracing solitude can be quite challenging, and often brings on moments of anxiety. It's a familiar feeling many of us can relate to.

In this scene, three figures sit in a diner late at night, their faces illuminated by the harsh light of the establishment, yet they seem disconnected from one another and the outside world. Hopper’s use of empty spaces and muted colors reinforce a feeling of loneliness, emphasizing that even in crowded urban settings, we can feel isolated and alienated.

This exploration of solitude in modern art aligns closely with existentialist philosophy, which emphasizes the very human struggle of find meaning in a seemingly indifferent universe. Existentialists like Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus grappled with themes of isolation, absurdity, and the quest for authenticity in a world seemingly devoid of inherent purpose. Artists like Munch and Hopper seem to have resonated with these ideas, portraying solitude as an anxious aspect of the human condition. Later artists reinterpreted the concept, linking it to personal reflection and growth.

Nature frequently acted as a mirror for human emotions, allowing artists like Georgia O'Keeffe to explore the depths of the human condition through their work. O'Keeffe masterfully captures solitude in her paintings of flowers and landscapes, evoking a sense of isolation while simultaneously conveying tranquility. Her vibrant blooms not only celebrate the beauty of nature but also reflect the complexities of human emotion, illustrating the reality that solitude can simultaneously bring discomfort and serenity.

Embracing the Challenge

From the Romantic period’s celebration of introspection to the existential angst of modernity, artists have captured the many ways in which solitude influences our lives, reminding us that solitude is all about finding comfort within ourselves. Reflecting on my own experiences, I’ve come to understand how solitude can be both a challenge and a blessing, allowing any one of us to confront our fears, find clarity, and ultimately learn from the experience. 

Just as O'Keeffe’s vibrant landscapes juxtapose serenity with turmoil, we too can discover beauty in the challenge of solitude and gain insights that can improve our relationship with ourselves and those around us.

Let’s be real: many of us girls have felt that pressure to fit one of these molds in the eyes of the men around us. The Complex suggests that these traits are mutually exclusive, forcing women to choose between being the nurturing and helpless feminine ideal—a figure “worthy” of bringing home to mom—or the daring, sultry woman who would not be considered a suitable wife. It’s a fascinating—and frustrating—exploration of how society views femininity, and it raises important questions about how female identity is perceived throughout history, particularly in art. 

The Complex starkly illustrates that desirability and purity are often viewed as mutually exclusive. As Freud famously noted, "Where such men love, they have no desire, and where they desire, they cannot love." This post is truly intended as an exploration of how this concept has been represented in art history, revealing the societal implications and the ongoing struggle for a more nuanced portrayal of women. 

A Flawed Conception of Femininity 

Freud theorized that men with the Madonna-Whore Complex struggle to separate their love for their mother from their romantic feelings. Essentially, they believe women cannot be both nurturing and sexual. To cope with this conflict, they compartmentalize their romantic love: they cherish women they view as ideal wives and mothers but feel little sexual attraction toward them. Conversely, they often desire women they consider promiscuous, yet devalue them. In this dichotomy, women are confined to a rigid binary: they are either “good” or “bad,” leaving no room for nuance. Personally, I see the Madonna-Whore Complex as a reflection of misogyny; women who don’t fit the mold of purity and submissiveness are often labeled as “bad.”

Camerino’s The Madonna of Humility with the Temptation of Eve vividly illustrates this dichotomy. In the painting, the Madonna breastfeeds her child, embodying love and virtue. She is portrayed as nurturing, modest, and motherly, surrounded by both earthly and heavenly beauty.

In stark contrast to the virtuous Madonna, Eve is depicted beneath her as a naked figure surrounded by darkness. Here, Camerino intentionally associates Eve with temptation and sin, emphasizing the Virgin’s purity against Eve’s fall from grace. According to the Biblical narrative, Eve embodies the ultimate perpetrator of sin. By allowing herself to be seduced by the serpent and raising the forbidden fruit to her mouth, she condemns humanity to an eternal ban from Eden. Ultimately, this scene serves as a perfect visual representation of the Madonna-Whore Complex.

Seduction Peeking Through Renaissance Art 

The contrast between the Madonna and the whore permeates Renaissance art, though with added nuance. In works like Raphael's Madonna and Child, women are idealized as pure and virtuous, embodying the Madonna archetype.

In contrast, Botticelli's Birth of Venus links women to desire, marking it as the first secular painting to incorporate nudity. Before Botticelli’s painting, nudity was primarily used in religious art to depict Eve's sin. In the Birth of Venus, Botticelli emphasizes the goddess’ nudity in a manner that is associated with beauty and myth, rather than sin and shame. The scene’s sensuality is amplified by the movement of hair and garments in the wind, adding a seductive touch and celebrating the beauty of the female form.

Botticelli paved the way for later Renaissance artists to explore the nude, as seen in Titian's Venus of Urbino, which embodies sensuality and allure, fitting the vixen archetype. Commissioned by the Duke of Urbino as a wedding gift for his younger wife, the painting’s evident sexualization of the female gender serves as a reminder of the bride’s marital duties. Here, the goddess of love is depicted as a sensual and alluring figure, daringly looking directly at the viewer, demanding their attention. This portrayal highlights the male desire for the vixen over the virgin, perhaps serving as another example of the Complex and the mutual exclusivity of virtue and desire.

Ambiguity in Baroque Painting

After the Renaissance, the lines between the virgin and the vixen became increasingly blurred. Baroque artists like Caravaggio delved into the Complexities of female identity, often depicting women who straddle the line between purity and seduction, highlighting the tension within the Complex. Notably, Caravaggio drew inspiration from all segments of Italian society, portraying both noblewomen and prostitutes in his work.

Caravaggio boldly challenged artistic norms to depict a more realistic view of female identity. In The Penitent Magdalene, he portrayed the Virgin Mary with the face of a known prostitute, accentuating her humility and remorse with a tear on her cheek. The courtesan who modeled for him met a tragic end, drowning in the Tiber. Under pressure to create The Death of the Virgin, Caravaggio reportedly had her corpse delivered to his studio, using it as inspiration for the lifeless Mary. Through his work, he blurred the lines between virgin and whore, illustrating how these opposing identities could coexist. This challenge to the Madonna-Whore Complex would resonate even more with artists in later centuries.

A Modern Challenge to the Complex

Modern artists like Gustave Courbet challenged traditional representations of women. In works like La Source, he overtly sexualizes the female form, challenging 19th century standards of piousness and virginal virtue. Similar to Caravaggio, Courbet championed realistic depictions, portraying people and their lives with raw honesty.

Courbet rejected the ideal and unattainable, expressing a deep distrust of the ruling class and authority. He aimed to challenge the fake standards of his time, portraying life as he saw it, no matter how unappealing. His paintings were meant to resonate with viewers, making realism his defining style. This is especially evident in his depictions of women, where their nakedness subverts traditional academic nudes by defying expected female roles. Courbet’s nudes challenge rigid 19th century Victorian ideals of female passivity, asserting that women possess their own sexuality and breaking away from the normative standard of the asexual woman.

Contemporary Critiques of the Madonna-Whore Complex

Moving into the contemporary era, artists like Cindy Sherman challenge and deconstruct traditional female archetypes - WIN! Sherman’s photography dives deep into the commonly observed roles women play in 1960’s society. Her photography is considered a product of the emerging feminist movement of the time, which aimed to raise awareness about female sexuality, and broaden women’s rights with respect to sexuality, work, and domestic life. Ultimately, Sherman’s work serves as a critique of the male gaze and its influence on female behavior. 

In her iconic piece Madonna, Cindy Sherman dons classic feminine attire, including an elegant robe and a delicate headscarf. She glows under the light, posing in a way reminiscent of the Virgin Mary beneath a halo, similar to biblical paintings. This pose critiques the idealized representations of women in art from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. By replicating these historical images, Sherman highlights the clichéd portrayals of femininity and the cliché associations between womanhood and purity, grace, and innocence. Interestingly, Sherman’s photography often depicts characters like the girl next door, the damsel in distress, and the housewife, further critiquing the narrow representations of women in contemporary times.

Travel is a powerful catalyst for cultural discovery as it prompts reflections on newness, foreignness, and our perceptions of the "other." Our instinct to link the "new" with the "different" highlights a key aspect of the human experience. We often compartmentalize our understanding of diverse cultures, viewing what is unfamiliar as the "other." It's crucial to note that this term isn't used negatively; instead, it serves as a framework for examining the complexities of perception and bias. 

This concept of the “other” was at the heart of 19th-century Orientalist thinkers as they encountered and "rediscovered" Eastern cultures. Prior to this, European contact with the East—encompassing Arab, Indian, Chinese, and other civilizations—was largely limited to trade and a few military campaigns. Orientalism emerged as a Western scholarly discipline focused on foreign literature, philosophy, history, and art. Yet, it was inevitably filtered through the biased lenses of Western tradition. 

Scholar Edward Said, who wrote extensively on the topic, argues that Orientalism is primarily a constructed image of the East, tailored for a Western audience. He shifts the focus from merely observing the Orient to examining how the West created its own unique perception of the East. This view highlights the binary relationship between these regions, where the West is considered "normative" and the East is seen as "other". While this perspective may seem subjective, it reveals valuable insights into how European imperialists viewed and understood different cultures in the 19th century.

European Imperialism as the Root of Orientalism 

Before exploring the artistic trends of the Orientalist movement, it’s important to understand the historical context that shaped this perspective. Orientalist thought emerged during the 19th century amid rampant imperialism. Key events, such as Napoleon’s expedition to Egypt and Algiers, British domination of India through the East India Company, the division of China into European spheres of influence, and the eventual partition of Africa between European powers set the stage.

At this time, European hubris reached its peak, with leaders from France, Britain, Spain, Portugal, and Belgium believing they had the right to claim and divide the world for their empires. This mindset fostered a sense of ownership and superiority over foreign cultures, as Western Europeans asserted control over distant lands and the people who lived there. Understanding this backdrop is crucial for grasping the complexities of the Orientalist movement.

An Imperial Ideology  

Empires didn’t just conquer militarily; they also sought ideological dominance. Orientalism produced beautiful visuals, but ultimately culminated into a narrative of power, superiority, and control. Western European empires were set on understanding the “other” mostly to facilitate conquest and control. As a result, orientalist narratives, whether in literature, art or poetry, were oversimplifying complex Eastern cultures and emphasized their “otherness”. This tendency to use broad categories to explain what is different has persisted throughout history. However, Orientalism formalized this process, presenting itself as objective knowledge.

In his treatise on orientalism, Edward Said critiques the exoticism found in Orientalist art, highlighting how Western European artists often portrayed the East in romanticized and stereotypical ways. These depictions reinforced problematic power dynamics. Many works included sexually suggestive scenes and cultural tropes that further emphasized Western superiority, reducing Eastern cultures to mere objects for Western fascination and consumption.

That being said, imperialism did facilitate international travel, trade and an increase in cultural exchanges. The conquest and increased control of the East opened new avenues for European artists and thinkers, allowing for easier travel and direct engagement with local traditions. While many artists relied on published travel logs for their impressions, artists like Jean-Léon Gérôme, Eugene Delacroix and Théodore Chassériau, embarked on journeys to the region to experience the East firsthand. These travels enriched their artistic repertoire with a wealth of "exotic" imagery that inspired their works.

The “Other” Illustrated

Orientalist paintings are a testament to the Western fascination with the East, portraying it as an exotic and mysterious land brimming with sensuality, mysticism and opulence. These artworks simultaneously celebrated the beauty of Eastern societies while reinforcing colonial power dynamics and stereotypes. By blending fantasy with simplified historical narratives, they created an alluring yet distorted vision of a complex world, inviting viewers to explore the enchanting “other” while overlooking the realities of life in the East.

Some of the most popular and influential Orientalist genre scenes center around harems - opulent interiors filled with nude or exotically adorned female slaves or concubines. These highly sexualized narratives thrived in these “foreign” scenes, allowing Western viewers to engage with them without the usual moral repercussions imposed by European standards. As a result, Orientalism reinforced a range of stereotypes about Eastern cultures, particularly regarding their perceived lack of "civilized" behavior and differing moral standards.

For instance, in Ingres’ Grande Odalisque, a daring - nude - woman gazes directly at the viewer, surrounded by a exotic elements such as a peacock feather fan, a colorful turban, and a hashish pipe. This scene invites the intended European audience to experience the harem. Such an erotic invitation is only made possible by the exotic and foreign setting that renders it acceptable within the context of the East and the “other”. In other words, Ingres would not have dared to make the same depiction of a European woman in her European home as it would have offended local morality

The perceived uncivilized barbarism and sexuality of the East is even more flagrant in Gérôme’s The Snake Charmer. Here, the scene depicts a nude child and invites the intended European viewer to make a moralistic judgment of the men watching the performance. This reinforced stereotypes regarding the perceived difference in morality and acceptable sexual practices between East and West.

Another prominent theme in Orientalist painting is depictions of foreign soldiers. This particular example represents a Bashi-Bazouk - or a type of foreign fighter known for its brutality and lack of formal military discipline.  who fought alongside the Ottoman Empire's Turkish army in pursuit of plunder. This illustration embodies a romanticized yet brutal vision of warfare.

Interestingly, some Orientalist works aimed to celebrate the perceived spiritual depth and mysticism of Eastern cultures. However, this portrayed spirituality often served as a contrast to the supposedly superior rationalism of the West.

Influencing European Culture

Ironically, the cultures that Western Europeans objectified and sought to dominate significantly influenced European tastes and trends. The allure and opulence of Orientalism inspired a demand for Eastern architectural motifs, furniture, decorative arts, and textiles among the European elite. During the mid-19th century, wealthy British families often drew inspiration from Oriental interiors.

In the end, Orientalism isn't just a relic of imperialist thinking; it’s a vivid movement woven from the threads of cultural tension and exchange. It challenges all viewers to reconsider how we perceive what is “new” and “different”. The stunning visuals born from this movement still captivate viewers today as a testament of European imperialism, urging us to explore a deeper understanding of other cultures.

While I iced my knee, Giulio shared a captivating story that left me pondering the nature of chance. He recounted a time decades ago, in Romania, when he fell for a young woman named Corina. Their romance flourished amid late nights at discotheques, but life pulled them in different directions, and Giulio eventually moved to Canada.

Fast forward ten years: while catching up with a friend in Bucharest, Giulio mentioned Corina. To his astonishment, his friend revealed that Corina was now his employee! It felt like fate. Giulio asked for her number, eager to reconnect. When he called, Corina was thrilled to hear from him. Giulio wasted no time and booked her a round-trip ticket so she could visit him. I couldn’t help but ask if they ended up together, and he smiled, saying, “No, it was just a friendly reunion”, and he added that “A life is more than a love.”

As I listened to Giulio’s story, I couldn’t help but reflect on the randomness of life and the chance encounters that shape our journeys. If I hadn’t tripped on those stairs, I never would have met Giulio or heard his extraordinary tale.

In a world where routine dominates our lives, serendipitous encounters remind us of the beauty of happenstance. This led me to ponder how chance and luck play significant roles in artistic creation, especially in painting, where unexpected accidents and surprises can lead to extraordinary results.

Happenstance in Modern Art

Jean-Paul Riopelle (1923-2002) exemplified this idea by embracing chance as a means of expression in his artwork. He deliberately invited forces beyond his control, allowing spontaneity to guide his creative process. Initially, he was devoted to the Automatist approach, which focused on painting without preconception. However, by 1949, Riopelle had begun to carve out a distinctive style in which the concept of chance became central to his work. Through his art, Riopelle showed us that sometimes the most compelling creations arise from the unexpected.

The Rise of Automatism

Riopelle began his career as a passionate advocate of automatist painting. Born in 1920s Montreal, he honed his craft at the École des Beaux-Arts. Under the mentorship of Paul-Émile Borduas, a founding member of the Montreal automatist movement, Riopelle was introduced to innovative artistic ideas. His journey took a significant turn in the late 1940s when he moved to Paris, where he became part of a vibrant Surrealist community. There, he developed a unique style influenced by the techniques of Jackson Pollock, marking an evolution in his artistic expression.

Automatism is an artistic approach that encourages the creation of artwork without deliberate thought, tapping directly into the depths of the unconscious mind. The Montreal Automatists, for example, aimed to break free from intention and structure, seeking to express a universal human experience devoid of bias. This quest for liberation from the conscious mind led them to adopt increasingly intuitive methods, such as the use of palette knives and fingers when painting. Ironically, these techniques often contradicted their claims of working without intention.

For Riopelle, the traditional tools like the brush were limitative. As he evolved his style, Riopelle sought to create ambitious abstract compositions characterized by generous applications of paint to create unusual textures. By abandoning figuration and tools typically used by painters, Riopelle developed a unique manner of applying paint. The result? His artworks took on a striking multichromatic, mosaic-like appearance that set him apart from his contemporaries in the 20th century art scene. Through this innovative approach, Riopelle carved out his own distinctive place in the art world.

Towards Freedom of Creation

Despite his early involvement with automatism, Jean-Paul Riopelle ultimately rejected this approach. In automatist artworks, artists maintain a degree of control, even while incorporating random elements into their compositions. This notion troubled Riopelle, who yearned for an art form that eliminated control, fostering an environment for true creative freedom.

For Riopelle, true creativity could only flourish through total chance. He believed that when artists fully open themselves to chance, they create a space for unexpected forces to shape art. This radical approach allowed for a new expression, where spontaneity and unpredictability took the reins. In his quest for artistic liberation, Riopelle invited the universe itself to influence his creations.

In the 1950s, Riopelle emerged with his signature style, creating massive, vibrant mosaic paintings using a palette knife and directly squeezing colors from the tube onto the canvas. This bold approach marked a significant departure from his earlier automatist roots.

My chance encounter with Giulio, his captivating love story, and Riopelle’s evolution toward a more liberated artistic expression all share a common thread: happenstance. This serendipitous element of life often surprises us when we least expect it, yielding good results (i.e. my drafting of this post).

Just as Giulio’s unexpected kindness led to an interesting conversation, Riopelle sought to achieve unbiased results in his artwork, ultimately culminating in creations born from pure chance. Happenstance infuses life with spontaneity, allowing for connections and experiences that would otherwise be impossible in a world where we hold total control over our lived experiences. In both art and life, embracing the unpredictable can lead to good outcomes.

A Note on International Recognition

Ultimately, Riopelle is one of Canada’s most celebrated artists. Since 1945, Riopelle has been featured in over 200 exhibitions worldwide, showcasing his work in major cities like Berlin, São Paulo, Philadelphia, and London. Notably, he received the UNESCO Prize after representing Canada at the Venice Biennale in 1962. Today, his artworks are held in public collections across more than 60 cities, totaling around 400 pieces.

This desire for escape often manifests as an embarkation on a new adventure. It can take the form of diving into a cultural immersion, exploring new landscapes, or connecting with new traditions. Each of these experiences offers us a chance to step outside of familiarity, even if only for a moment, inviting us to discover new perspectives and, perhaps, new parts of ourselves.

According to myth, Cythera was one of the locations where Aphrodite emerged from the sea, symbolizing her connection to love, desire, and beauty.

Cythera is often depicted as a paradise of romantic allure, making it a favored setting for tales of love and passion. The island serves as a backdrop for various legends, embodying the idea of an idyllic escape where one can find love and happiness. Its association with Aphrodite not only highlights the themes of romance but also the timeless pursuit of joy and connection.

The 18^th century saw a resurgence of interest in classical antiquity, spurred by the Enlightenment. Artists looked on ancient myths as a source of inspiration, using them to explore the complexities of human experience. Many Rococo artists were commissioned by the aristocracy, who appreciated the sophistication of mythological subjects as a reflection of their own cultural refinement and social status. By idealizing Greek mythology, these painters crafted scenes that captured the essence of love, longing, and transformation, ultimately enriching the artistic landscape of their time.

Interestingly, the Embarkation for Cythera illustrates an odd contrast between the anticipation of new love and adventure, while simultaneously evoking a wistful nostalgia. Love is a central theme of the painting. The figures, captured in various stages of intimacy and connection, embody the complexity of romantic relationships. Some characters seem to exchange gentle gazes while others engage in playful flirtation. Watteau conveys the intoxicating nature of love. This depiction resonates with anyone who has experienced the exhilaration of new romance.

Plato’s texts provide access to Socratic insights on morality, love, and the human experience. The most significant discussions of Socratic philosophy regarding love can be found in Plato’s Phaedrus and Symposium. In these texts, Socrates presents a complex vision of love that intertwines beauty and goodness, prompting us to question the foundations of our affections, and the motives behind our pursuit of love.

Beauty as the Essence of Love

In the dialogues of Phaedrus and Symposium, Socrates discusses the concept of beauty, using the term kallos, which can be translated from its original Greek not just as “beautiful”, but also as “good,” “noble,” or “fine.” The duality of this terminology becomes evident as Socrates describes love, not as a simple pursuit of beauty, but as an intricate desire rooted in a recognition of the good. In this framework, Socrates associates beauty with goodness. He claims that when we encounter beauty, we are reminded of a higher ideal that we, in our imperfect state, strive to embody, and we are drawn to this ideal in the pursuit of love.

In the Phaedrus, Socrates is engaged in a lively debate with a wise woman named Diotima, who enlightens him on the true nature of love. She argues that love is a multifaceted concept that goes beyond mere appreciation of beauty. She presents love as a ladder of ascent, starting from the appreciation of individual beauty, moving to the beauty of the soul, and ultimately culminating in the love of an abstract form, or a perfect ideal. This journey emphasizes love as a driving force toward personal and spiritual growth, guiding one toward wisdom and the divine.

Socrates and Diotima’s exchange seems to convey that love is deeply intertwined with a desire for what we feel we lack, creating a complicated dynamic between the lover and the beloved. This irony sheds light on the unique nature of Ancient Greek pederastic relationships, where admiration and beauty play central roles. In these relationships, the lover, most often an older man, typically offers admiration and emotional depth, while the beloved, a younger man, embodies youth and beauty—qualities that the lover may feel are missing in their own life. This exchange of complementary attributes not only highlights the complexities of love but perhaps also reflects a longing for balance in romantic relationships.

The Pursuit of Happiness Through Beauty

Socrates presents love as a yearning for beauty that ignites a spark of realization: lovers, often perceived as mad, reshape their lives in the quest for a beloved that is beautiful. Socrates’s insistence that love centers on beauty raises an intriguing dilemma with real-life implications.

I believe that while beauty represents an ideal, and may suggest goodness, it may not be enough to sustain love. This aligns with Diotima’s teachings, which guide Socrates through the evolution of love—from appreciating beauty to fulfilling the soul. The real challenge is recognizing that although the pursuit of beauty can present a vision of perfection, it doesn’t guarantee a deep understanding of ourselves or those we love.

The Pitfalls of Beauty-Centric Love

Socrates’s examination of love suggests that it can be transactional, leading to a key critique: when love is seen only through the lens of self-interest, it risks becoming selfish. This self-centered view overlooks the altruistic nature of love. In the Phaedrus, one character argues that those who are obsessed with an ideal love often neglect their own well-being, making them unreliable partners. Thus, the pursuit of love should focus on self-love and love for others, rather than just the love of beauty.

True love, as Diotima suggested to Socrates in the Symposium, is about creating something beautiful—whether in body or mind—that contributes to our immortality. This higher form of love transcends mere attraction to beauty; it is a commitment to virtue and self-betterment.

Beyond Beauty

Ultimately, Socratic philosophy encourages us to reflect on our understanding of love. From this reflection, I gather that while beauty can spark love, it’s the pursuit of personal and mutual growth that perfects the soul and helps us reach the ideals we seek. This perspective allows us to appreciate the complexities of love and motivates us to cultivate deeper, more meaningful connections with others.

Ironically, Socrates met his end at the hands of the very people of Athens he sought to enlighten, accused of corrupting their youth. In the powerful depiction known as The Death of Socrates, we see the philosopher in his cell, engaging with his sorrowful followers as he contemplates the immortality of the soul, moments before he drinks the hemlock from a goblet.

These reflections prompted an exploration into the role of funerary portraits from the Fayum region of Egypt, specifically those commissioned by Greek elites during the early centuries A.D. These portraits were more than mere artistic representations; they were integral to preserving the memory and status of the deceased.

During this period, Greek elites commissioned painted wooden panels that were meticulously secured within linen wrappings mixed with plaster, and then placed over the face of the mummified body. This practice not only honored the deceased but also signaled their wealth and social standing. The portraits, which were crafted with great care and detail, served as enduring tributes, capturing the likeness and spirit of the deceased. This funerary tradition ensured that their memory continued to resonate with the living, providing a lasting connection that transcended death.

New Funerary Traditions

The Fayum portraits are a fascinating testament to the blend of cultural beliefs about death and the afterlife that emerged in Egypt after its conquest by Alexander the Great in 332 B.C. As Greeks, and later Romans, settled in Egypt, they brought their own customs while also adopting local Egyptian traditions. By the second century A.D., when most of these portraits were created, Egypt had become a melting pot of various cultures.

As Greeks settled in Egypt, they adopted local mummification practices, which Egyptians believed to be crucial for the afterlife. However, instead of using the traditional relief masks that Egyptians placed on mummies, people of Greek origin opted to attach painted portraits to the mummified bodies.

This practice led to the creation of the Fayum portraits between the 1^st and 3^rd centuries A.D. These funerary portraits, typically painted with wax-based paints on wood, were placed over the face of the mummified body, aiming to preserve the likeness of the deceased. Each portrait was akin to an idealized photograph of the deceased taken at the time of death, immortalizing the specific features of the deceased.

With about 900 known Fayum portraits, these images offer a remarkable glimpse into the diverse population of Egypt during this time. They depict people of all ages, captured in a strikingly lifelike manner, simultaneously featuring visual elements of Egyptian, Greek and Roman traditions.

Painting the Dead

For years, it was believed that the Fayum portraits were painted while the subjects were still alive and displayed in their homes as decorative items. According to this theory, the portraits were only later attached to the mummies. Some portraits even show signs of having been framed for display, suggesting that these individuals commissioned the portraits to adorn their homes as a sort of pre-death decoration.

However, this theory was challenged with recent discoveries. Researchers, using computed tomography scans of the mummies, revealed a surprising truth: many of the individuals depicted in these portraits died around the same age as they appear in their likenesses, suggesting that most of these portraits were only painted after their subjects had passed away. This new discovery adds a layer of mystery to the Fayum portraits, as we still don’t fully understand their religious significance, or the complete burial rites associated with them. What we do know is that these portraits likely evolved from ancient Egyptian funerary practices but were creatively adapted by a diverse and multicultural elite. Instead of being pre-death decorations, these portraits were probably posthumous tributes, designed to immortalize the features and memory of the deceased.

Immortalizing Status and Wealth

The mummification process preserved the physical body, while funerary portraits aimed to capture and preserve the soul. The Fayum portraits, created for the Greco-Egyptian elite of the Roman-administered Fayum Governorate, highlighted the deceased’s high social status. This conjecture is evident in two main ways: first, the elite's ability to commission these portraits, which required considerable financial resources and access to exotic materials, and second, the elaborate symbolism and detail within the portraits themselves.

Only the elite could afford the artistry and expensive materials required for these portraits. These portraits were painted on imported wood, including oak, fir, and yew from Europe, and cedar from Lebanon. The wax-based paints used in these portraits featured both local and exotic pigments, such as red pigment from Spain, showcasing the extensive trade networks accessible to the wealthy elite. Additionally, craftsmen employed gold leaf to enhance the appearance of jewelry and wreaths depicted in the portraits.

These portraits were designed to preserve and showcase the deceased's wealth and status even after death. The elite often displayed their wealth through elaborate gold jewelry and precious stones. Male subjects frequently wore wreaths made of leaves and flowers, symbols associated with military victory and eternal life in Greek and Roman culture. Female subjects were adorned with a variety of precious and semi-precious stones, such as emerald, carnelian, garnet, agate, amethyst, and occasionally pearls. Some portraits even feature intricate necklaces with stones set in gold. This ornamentation was intended to highlight the deceased’s achievements and status in life, extending their prestige into the afterlife.

Fun fact – According to a publication from the J. Paul Getty Museum, it appears that completed mummies, including their funerary portraits, might have been kept around the family home for some time before burial. They were sometimes displayed until they became neglected or damaged— possibly by children playing around them. Eventually, these mummies would receive a proper burial. This insight comes from the work of archaeologist Sir Flinders Petrie (1853–1942), who found mummies that had been worn and defaced, likely due to such household mishaps.
